yosemite national park is situated in eastern california, made famous by the work of ansel adams. this most dramatic of places has long been on the ‘must visit’ list of giles norman. he finally got there in march 2004. working under the heavenly gaze of a past master, he created his first american portfolio, some of which you can see here. over the last number of years giles Normans work has concentrated on what he calls ‘pure landscape’, finding wild and remote places and photographing only what nature has laid down - keeping man-made intrusions to a minimum, if at all. visiting these areas with the same camera and lens for many years, the thought of changing equipment never occurred. a chance viewing of an article on the new hasselblad x-pan camera changed all of this, as giles realised here was the perfect tool for the work he was now doing; while still a 35mm camera the dual format x-pan could also give a longer panoramic image perfectly suiting his pure landscape ideals. the longer negative also gives the opportunity to print the image much larger without compromising quality. the perfect photographic marriage between artistic desire and technical availability had been made.
